ALGIERS, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Algeria on Sunday condemned the terrorist attack that killed at least nine Tunisian security officers, and expressed its solidarity with Tunisian authorities in their fight against the scourge of terrorism.

"Algeria strongly condemns the terrorist attack that targeted Sunday a patrol of the Tunisian National Guard in the province of Jendouba," Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Abdelaziz Benali Cherif was quoted as saying by APS news agency.

He expressed condolences to the families of the security officers, the Tunisian government and the Tunisian people.

"We express our full solidarity with Tunisia, and we remain convinced that the heinous and blind terrorism can never destabilize this brotherly country to combat and defeat this scourge," he concluded.

Tunisia on Sunday witnessed the deadliest terrorist attack for over two years when a mine exploded at the passage of their patrol in the province of Jendouba near the border with Algeria, local media reported.

The source added that when the mine exploded, terrorists opened fire on the patrol, before running away.

The latest major attack in the country dates back to March 2016, when terrorists raided security facilities in Ben Guerdane near the border with Libya, killing 13 National Guard officers and 7 civilians.

Security cooperation has always been at the heart of the Algerian-Tunisian relations, amid the increasing terrorist threat on their shared borderline.

To effectively respond to the upsurge of terrorist acts throughout the Maghreb and Sahel region, the two countries have strengthen their intelligence and military operations.
