JAKARTA, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Six people have gone missing and eight have managed to survive after a boat carrying 14 fishermen sank in Indonesia's province of East Kalimantan, an official said on Monday.
The boat, identified as KM Mina Maritim 148, reportedly sank amid extreme weather on Sunday off in the waters of Talisayan, Berau Regency, according to head of the Balikpapan Search and Rescue Office Dody Setiawan, as reported by state news agency Antara.
He said that a joint rescue team is still conducting an intensive search for those missing.
Taking boats is a favorite means of transport in Indonesia, an archipelago country with over 17,000 islands, but lack of safety standards has often triggered sea accidents. ■
